I have had an iPhone for the last 4 years. I started with the 3G the day it came out. I have been extremely happy with the funcitonality of the iPhone, but I have always felt I needed more freedom. I do not like the restrictions apple puts onto the device and their monopolistic way of doing business. I decided Jailbreaking was the only logical move. Since then, I have not looked back. I have held off on upgrading to the iPhone 5 because there is no jailbreak for it. I am still using an iphone 4S 16gb running iOS 5.0.1. Here are a few of the reasons I love my jailbroken iPhone:
1) Barrel - $2.99 for this App. It can be found on BigBoss's Repo
While this does not have a whole lot of functionality, this app allows me to change the way my icons move. It has many different 'effects' that help to customize the device. I have found this app to be a crowd pleaser! Everyone I have showed, immediately wants this app. Here is a photo of me transitioning from one screen to the next:
This app is a way to get 'paid' apps for free. It bypasses the App Store and downloads the app directly. This is also a way to get legacy versions of apps. While this is not important for people that have newer devices, anyone with an iPhone 3g that wants to use the facebook app would need to download an older version. I recommend this app specifically for this feature. I do not believe in downloading paid apps because then the developers do not get paid. This is how many people make a living.
3) Grooveshark - Free App. It can be found from on BigBoss's Repo
Imagine Pandora mixed with Youtube. Any song you want to listen to in any order. It is an amazing app. It does require a paid subscription, but it allows you to have a free trial. Alternatively, you can open safari (or Chrome) and go to http://html5.grooveshark.com. This is a must have. Let me know what you think about it in the comments.
4) Activator - Free App. It can be found on BigBoss's Repo
This app can be as useful as you want it to be. It allows you to 'create actions'. For instance, on my device, I double tap the home button and it unlocks my screen. I can double tap the power button and the flashlight comes on. If I slide my finger from the bottom left to the top right, it will launch safari (this is from any screen I am on). Takes some getting used to, but it has a ton of functionality and can make navigating the iPhone even easier!
5) BiteSMS - $9.00. It can be found on BigBoss's Repo
As a long-time hall of fame jailbreak app, the latest version of biteSMS replaces the default iOS messaging system. You can quick compose and reply to incoming SMS messages from anywhere, including the lock screen. Version 6 has been optimized for iOS 5, and biteSMS is still the best way to text on the iPhone. The app replaces your default Messages app, with a much improved app with interface as well as texting from any app (you dont have to leave your current app to reply to the text). It carries an expensive price tag at $9.00, but by the time you get used to it, you will LOVE it!
There you have it! These are my favorites. Do you have any recommendations for apps I missed? Are there any apps you like better? I would love any feedback you might have.
